Food Pairing/Combining
Food combining is a method of eating foods in a specific order or combination. There are many health conditions that can benefit from food combining. Some of the health conditions that may benefit from this method of eating are indigestion, inflammatory bowels, flatulence, food allergies and intolerances, fatigue, and peptic ulcers.
Foods digest at different rates in our body. By eating the 3 main catagories of foods at different times, it can allow for more complete and efficient digestion.
Protein foods require the most time and energy for the body to digest. Protein foods are foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, soy and dairy products.
Carbohydrates are the starches and sugars found in foods that give the body most of its energy needs. Carbohydrates break down faster than protein but not as quickly as fruit. Carbohydrates include squash, grains, beets, sweet potatoes, carrots, Etc...
Fruits are high sugar carbohydrates that are digested very quickly. Fruits should be considered separately in food combining.
Fruits are the least time and energy for digestion. They should be eaten before meal or at least 2 hours after period when eating fruit this way, it acts as a digestive cleanser and promotes digestive function.
The best food combination are:
- eat fruit alone and preferably at breakfast
- melons and bananas should be in separately from other fruit
- eat proteins with non-starchy vegetables such as leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, celery, peppers, tomatoes, Etc...
- eat grains with non-starchy vegetables
